The trip at a glance
Driving north means you finish in the tropics. Book a one-way rental — Sydney pick-up, Cairns drop-off — and expect a one-way fee on top of the daily rate. The calculator on our home page adds it to your total.
Driving times below are approximate and assume no long stops. Motorhomes are slower than cars, so add time for fuel, food and the occasional roadworks.
Most rental agreements don't allow ferries, and doing so can void the insurance. For K'gari and Magnetic Island, leave the motorhome on the mainland and take a tour or a passenger ferry.

Which motorhome for this trip?
Three weeks is a long time in a small space. A family of four is usually more comfortable in a 6-berth with a separate bed that doesn't have to be made up each night, and an onboard shower and toilet make free and basic campsites possible. See our 6-berth comparison for sleeping layouts, child-seat space and fuel use.
Before you book
- Check the depot's opening hours in Cairns before you book flights home.
- Ask whether the one-way fee is included in the price you're quoted.
- Diesel use for 6-berth rentals is published at 11–14 litres per 100 km. Over about 2,800 km with detours, that is roughly 310–390 litres.
- Book Byron Bay, Noosa and Airlie Beach campsites ahead during school holidays.
